Tonight we had a special feature on the exciting Anglo-Swedish band We Ghosts. Sadly the band were unable to play live but we heard some great tracks by them from studio and live recordings.
We Ghosts are Jen (Get well soon, Jen!), John and Fran. They produce beautifully crafted music with rhythmic guitar work and close harmonies. Thank you to John from the band who spoke to Martin Hodge on the phone and gave lots of interesting info re the band. Check out their music and gigs on myspace and take a look at youtube too.

From We Ghosts' live album we played Ghostdancer and The Lost Light. From their forthcoming album Almost Alone we heard the title track plus Destiny and Seeds.

Tony and Carl played compositions by the band: The Goyle, Val's and The Mink Sporran plus Two Reels and Marie McLennan and performed the song Westlin Winds (Robert Burns) in readiness for Burn's Night on 25 January.

So much music

There are so many sources to obtain music these days that sometimes we feel spoilt for choice. When we started rootsandshoots we played from our own collections of CDs. Now we download music, get sent music from musicians and promoters, make use of websites like Youtube and Spotify and so on and mostly play from a laptop rather than discs. Each of us has different - overlapping - tastes and we individually plan our programmes. Very often one of us plays a piece of music that prompts the other to play something to compliment it and so the playlist develops organically.

More and more, we feature live music which is always a treat. See the blog entry below for information on the musicians coming on rootsandshoots soon.

Our season of live music on rootsandshoots begins on Monday 16 January with the excellent Devon-based band Jiggerypipery. Two members of the band - fiddler Carl Allerfelt and cittern player and guitarist Tony Bayliss - will join us to play and talk about their music. Check out their gigs on myspace.

On 23 January we welcome a three-piece Anglo-Swedish band We Ghosts who have a loyal and growing following in Sweden and south-east England for their sumptuous music influenced by folk, blues and other genres.

And always a range of superb music from around the world.

Dave Wood is highly regarded for his ability to re-interpret traditional songs and tunes as well as classics from The Beatles and Motown era. His own songs are particularly popular and his song May the Kindness has been recorded by the well known folk singer and musician Jackie Oates. His versatile use of open-tuned guitar and subtle bottleneck provide a backdrop for his rich, emotive voice. Whether on solo acoustic or electric guitar, or in combination with percussion and bass on original songs, Dave's highly individual guitar style shines.

Mudskippers are fast gaining a strong reputation for playing beautifully arranged, mainly self-penned and largely acoustic music. Their performance at Exeter Respect Festival was extremely well received.

This promises to be a special evening to entertain and delight music-lovers.

With intelligent and perceptive lyrics and terrific melodies, Gecko produce danceable and fun songs. Will and Gabriel performed some of them for us on rootsandshoots and talked about how they got started and how Gecko have developed into one of the most exciting young acts in London. Their music crosses various genres including hip-hop, rock and folk and usually includes a strong story telling aspect.

We had a whale of a time in the studio tonight and hope you listeners enjoyed the feast of live music as much at home.

It was good to welcome back to Phonic FM ace local singer, guitarist, songwriter Jaime Leigh who joined me to play recordings of her choice.

From London, Marcus Bonfanti gave us an amazing live performance. Marcus is fast building a reputation for his own blues influenced music - and we found out why. Great songs, delivered in Marcus's deep, rich and expressive voice and a guitar style that just sings.

Jaime Leigh also sang and played for us live, at times accompanied by top folk fiddler (on viola and violin)
Ben van Weede. Beautiful songs written by Jaime plus a snazzy bluegrass number with Ben contributing a mean fiddle accompaniment. The songs: A Friend Like You; Painted Smiles; Finding My Ground (available on Jaime's album of the same name); Blackberry Blossom.

The Bad Shepherds play punk songs on folk instruments, not as a gimmick but because they like the music and the words.

The session with Cole Stacey and
Chris Woods on rootsandshoots
this evening was highly entertaining.

Chris began. He showed his skill on the guitar by playing a composition of his own Resilience ...which aptly demonstrated the amazing percussive effects he can achieve on the instrument.

Chris accompanied Cole on the banjo - another instrument he plays exceedingly well - as Cole sang and played guitar for his own song Light A Candle.

Cole is a passionate and inspirational performer and is increasingly in demand for gigs across the country. He and Chris are nearing the end of a highly successful tour together. Locally, you can catch them at The Globe, Topsham this Wednesday 26 October if you can get a ticket.

Cole also gave us If You, a version of which is on his album Changing Faces.

Cole brought an album along by an idol of his- and a big influence on his music - Paul Simon. From this album Rhyming Simon he played Something So Right.

Without too much arm twisting, Chris gave us another two superbly played tunes of his: Night Life and Rolling Hills.

In a short stretch of time on rootsandshoots tonight we had an amazing variety of styles and tempos in the singing and guitar playing of the talented and lovely Nicky Swann. Such beautiful songs - and what an amazing voice she has! Nicky brought along with her an accomplished and equally lovely accompanist, the cahon player Katie Marie. Many, many thanks to both musicians for their wonderful set this evening.

Nicky's songs for us were Diving, Runaway and New Found Lands, all her own compositions.
From Nicky's album Matches And Dispatches, we played the self-penned Longtime and a magical version of I Want To Hold Your Hand.

I had a great time recently at Sziget Festival on an island in the middle of the Danube in Budapest, Hungary. My journey there and back by train was quite an adventure and happily I shared it with a good friend Jill Ashby. Sziget is rightly described as Central Europe's global village and there were some fantastic musicians there.
We travelled on to Szarzeau in Brittany to join friends on a very friendly campsite near the sea. The musicians from Poisson Rouge - whose bass player is rootsandshoots' Martin Henning - were there and went down a storm playing their fantastic dance music in local villages and towns. And how we danced - at Fest Noz and Fest Diaz (the nearest we have are ceilidhs but the Breton events are even more inclusive)!!
I hope you enjoyed this evening's show and the music played - mostly by artists I saw and heard on my hols.

That's a quote from the legendary Bob Cann (1916-90) who founded Dartmoor Folk Festival 34 years ago. He was the grandfather of Mark Bazeley, melodeon and concertina player. Accordionist Jason Rice comes from the famous Chagford-based Rice family. Alan Quick is the press and grants officer for Dartmoor Folk Festival.
All three guested on rootsandshoots today. Fantastic music, guys! We thank them all for coming in and hope that they had as much of a ball as we did! All who attend the festival can be sure of a fantastic and memorable time.

Dartmoor Folk Festival follows Sidmouth Folk Week and many of the artists featured today are appearing at one or both events. The dates for the respective festivals this year are 5 - 7 August (Dartmoor) and 29 July - 5 August (Sidmouth).

We frequently put out messages on air inviting listeners to email or phone in even though we recognise that probably only a small proportion want to do so. It's always good to get a response even when a listener tells us in no uncertain terms that a track we've played is not to their taste - which happened today. Bradninch Festival performers Reg Meuross and The Boys From Melbourne Street

Superb singer, songwriter and guitarist Reg Meuross gave an exquisite performance on rootsandshoots this evening. At least one listener was so captivated that he he promptly ordered Reg's new album online. You too can do the same here.
Reg is a busy man and you can check out his many gigs on his website. He performed for us by request The Shoreline And The Sea (from his album All This Longing) and his wonderful interpretation of the Dick Turpin story Lizzie Loved A Highwayman (from his album Dragonfly).

Reg's brand new album of recordings made between 2006 and 2011 is available online and the CD will be on sale soon. It's called The Dreamed And The Drowned and is highly recommended. From it, we played the title track and Mr Rain The Taylor.

Reg Meuross with an amazing band are appearing at Bradninch Music Festival this Saturday 11 June along with our other guests on this evening's show The Boys From Melbourne Street who - as always - gave us a polished and highly entertaining set. They played Chinese Whispers, Trouble Tonight and Your Life.

Fun, fun, fun tonight - at least in the first half of the show with funky music from Eric Ness and his accompanists Henrietta, Ryan, Joseph and Sam. Amazing that we fitted all these people into a tiny space along with flute, guitars, mandolin - and a huge double bass!! Lots of guests in the studio tonight and it was all great fun - at least I thought so!

Emma and Nick spoke to us about Exeter's Street Heat
Samba Band - who began in Exmouth, it seems. They are celebrating their 20th Birthday at Exeter Quay from 11:00 this Saturday 14 May with their Celebration of Samba. They will be parting with other south-west sambistas (a new word for me!).

We had a party in the studio later in the show when Detroit stars Billy Brandt and Sarana VerLin, along with local accompanists JJ Quick and Pete Chart. They performed no less than 5 songs - superbly...
Ain't Gonna Run, Exeter Town (written by Sarana after her visit last year when she fell in live with Exeter; yes, she does know it's a city!), Wind Through the Pines, Thirteen Days and Bats And Butterflies. We had a chance to compare the latter with the recorded version played earlier. The versions were both very good and quite different!

Beautiful harmony singing from Ex-Swedes this evening.

The Swedish / Finnish group comprise Rosa Rebecca (accompanying the second song on guitar), Ulrike, Gita, Annika, Anette and Maggie. They sang two songs: Jag Vet Endeglig Rosa (trad. Swedish arr. Rosa Rebecca) and Cecilia Lind (Cornelis Wreeswiik arr. Rosa Rebecca.

These two fine local musicians have recently come together for a musical collaboration which has resulted in some wonderful music.
