The Gardening Tips
With May on
its way, we have THE ROOTS & SHOOTS GARDENING TIPS
  • When all frost danger has passed you can move your stored fuchsias and geraniums outdoors. Feed them and water them well.
  • When they have finished blooming, you should deadhead your spring flowering bulbs. Do not cut off the green foliage yet! These green leaves continue to grow for a few weeks, and provide the bulb with food for flowering next year.
  • April and May are good months to select and plant fruit trees and berry plants. Fruits and berries do best when planted in full sun.
  • Seeds to plant now indoors or in the greenhouse include celery, cucumber, peppers and tomatoes. Outdoors you can sow beetroot, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, onions, radishes and sweet peas. Under cover put in tomato, leek and sweet corn seeds.
  • As your direct-seeded crops sprout, be sure to keep them thinned out to avoid crowding.
  • Cut out all the dead canes from your raspberry patch. The new canes that will bear this year's fruit should have new, swollen buds along the edges. Thin these to five canes per foot of row to allow good air circulation and prevent overcrowding.
HAPPY GARDENING FROM ROOTS & SHOOTS!

Live next week...The Roots Union

Tobias Ben Jacob: vocals, guitar
Phillip Henry: dobro, harmonica, beatbox
Hannah Martin: violin, backing vocals

"Every once in a while a band come along who don’t need to rely on a barrage of hyperbole to get your attention. Their music speaks plainly and compellingly for itself. The Roots Union are such a band. The Exeter and Brighton based four- piece wield acoustic guitars, Dobro slide guitar, harmonica, violin, drums and four– part harmonies. They are Tobias Ben Jacob, Phillip Henry, Hannah Martin and Michael Sykes. The band have already played shows at venues across the South, on the UK festival circuit and even as far afield as Hamburg. They have just finished a much anticipated new EP with producer Nick Gordon in Exeter and are gearing up for a very busy year ahead.
