South west music and more

I was back unexpectedly for a second week on the trot while Martin Henning was having a musical rehearsal. Today I featured, as well as an eclectic selection of global sounds, information on some festivals coming up soonish in south west England and associated music.

Moscow Magazine and cake

Hi all.
Had a lovely session in the studio on Monday's (11.2.13) show with local band Moscow Magazine playing live.

We had one really good mic working which amazingly seemed to pick up the four piece band pretty. Alice, Jim, Phil and Gabriel (vocals, guitar ,guitar/percussion and keyboard) played 4 of their original songs and there were 2 tracks from their demo CD broadcast as well.

In addition Alice brought in some very tasty cakes that she had baked that afternoon. hat could be better?

4.2.13 - Music from Mali, Palestine and many other parts of the world.

Tonight - 4.2.13 - Roots and Shoots featured music from Mali including an album by Bassekou Kouyate and Ngoni ba called Jama Ko. Bassekou writes about the album, 

"Jama Ko means 'a big gathering ofpeople'... There are over 90% Muslims in Mali,but our form of Islam here has nothing to do with a radical form of Sharia: that is not our culture. We have been singing praise songs for the Prophet for hundreds of years. If the Islamists stop people music making they will rip the heart out of Mali".

As well as this the show broadcast music from the Palestinian community. Against all the odds after being bulldozed out of his country by the Israeli government and brought up on a refugee camp, Ramzi Aburedwan managed to study music in what's left of Palestine and escape to Paris to live and record an album called Reflections of Palestine, a track from which, Sodfa, was played.

Also from the Palestinian community I played, Al Shatte Al Akhar by Kamilya Jubran from an album called Listen To The Banned - music recorded by different musicians who have been subject to being banned from playing their music for political or religious reasons.

Whether it's Islamists or Israelis it takes a lot to break the human spirit - music will continue to be made.
