Anglo-Japanese-Russian studio Respect

Tremendous fun and creativity in the Phonic FM studio tonight! Many, many thanks to Ainote-San - the trio from Whaletone Opera - plus Dmitri Babichev who entertained us all. I was secretly hoping that they would all jam together and, after their individual sets, that's just what they did - superbly. I hope these pictures give some flavour of what went on in the studio.
See Ainote-San at Ryan's Bar, Abbey Road, Torquay tomorrow (Tues) and at Barbican, Plymouth Friday.

Stop Press! Special Show this Monday!!

On rootsandshoots this Monday 13 July (even though in Russia, Monday 13th is unlucky!) we are expecting 2 guests to perform for us...
Dmitri Babichev, a superb Russian singer, guitarist
plus members of
Whaletone Opera: expect the unexpected. Possibly music from paper bags, balloons, even recognisable instruments and anything that's around in the studio (help!!) Voices too - like you've never heard before...

...unless you were at the excellent Respect In The Park yesterday where we meet them in the Acoustic marquee. What a great time we all had at Respect. Well done Paul Giblin and the Respect team.

Then we had the rootsandshoots Gardening Tips for July:
  • Sink pots of compost amongst strawberry plants and roots runners.
  • Burn old strawberry plants before planting with new stock, preventing disease and viruses from spreading.
  • On trained fruit trees, cut back the sideshoots by half.
  • Apple and pear trees will shed some fruit. This is quite natural. It's the tree’s way of restricting the amount of fruit that develops.
  • Give your apple trees a Summer pruning to encourage swelling of the fruit.
  • Feed tomato plants regularly. A good organic liquid feed can be made by soaking plenty of comfrey in water.
  • Continually nip out side shoots from tomato plants. These reduce the amount of food available to fruit bearing branches. Nip out the growing tip after the plant has produced 4-5 trusses of tomatoes.
  • Continue to earth up potatoes to stop the tubers being exposed to light and turning green.
  • Ensure that soil in hanging baskets and patio planters is kept moist. Remove fading and dead flower heads from plants to encourage new flowers.
  • Move houseplants outside for some summer sunshine.

Live and kicking!

We in the rootsandshoots team had a great - if, occasionally, nailbiting - time on Monday when the show went out live from the Exeter Phoenix Cafe Bar. The music was superb!!

Our congratulations and thanks to Gris Sanderson & The Harpaphonic Ensemble (Sam and Louis), to Alice Jemima and to Poisson Rouge (Louise, Martin, Phil, Sarah and Roger).

Thanks are due too to our audience and to the many others who helped out -
including Geoff the runner, JC the technician, and the Phoenix bar staff - and to Phonic FM board members Patrick and David for their help, encouragement and support. Also to Tony for publicity via the www.phonic.fm website and to all the DJs and presenters on Phonic FM who put out our trailer for the event/show.

We are, of course, grateful to all our listeners - a special thanks to those of you who got in touch to say how much you enjoyed what you heard!

Cheers,
Martin, Martin and Rich
