Live and kicking!

We in the rootsandshoots team had a great - if, occasionally, nailbiting - time on Monday when the show went out live from the Exeter Phoenix Cafe Bar. The music was superb!!

Our congratulations and thanks to Gris Sanderson & The Harpaphonic Ensemble (Sam and Louis), to Alice Jemima and to Poisson Rouge (Louise, Martin, Phil, Sarah and Roger).

Thanks are due too to our audience and to the many others who helped out -
including Geoff the runner, JC the technician, and the Phoenix bar staff - and to Phonic FM board members Patrick and David for their help, encouragement and support. Also to Tony for publicity via the www.phonic.fm website and to all the DJs and presenters on Phonic FM who put out our trailer for the event/show.

We are, of course, grateful to all our listeners - a special thanks to those of you who got in touch to say how much you enjoyed what you heard!

Cheers,
Martin, Martin and Rich

My trip

Thanks for joining me on my musical trip to countries I've visited. With so many musical fusions around, it can be difficult to assign a recording to a particular country but for this entry only I've tried to do just that. Summer Bal & Picnic on Dartmoor

The 2 Martins from rootsandshoots are involved with a special Breton and French dance event on Dartmoor this coming weekend 6 - 7 June. Wonderful live music - including guests The Wendigo Trio (pictured). It's organised by Ide-based group d'Accord. Full details here.

The Roots and Shoots Gardening Tips for June

  • If you've grown your own bedding plants, see that you water them well before you plant them out.
  • Now your rhododendrons and azaleas have nearly finished flowering, the dead flowers try to form a seed. Remove the seed heads as this will allow the new shoots to grow.
  • It’s the strawberry season. As the fruits form, they need plenty of water. If there’s a dry spell, water them well, especially if you are growing them in towers.
  • It's a great time to plant apple and pear and other fruit trees. Fruit trees require two different varieties to pollinate properly. Be aware of this and ask a nursery professional to guide you in selecting varieties.
  • With tomatoes and potatoes coming on, if you’ve got comfrey growing on your plot, steep lots of the leaves in a water container to make a foul smelling but rich feed for the tomatoes and potatoes.
  • June is a great time to plant! Plants that provide colour in the month of June include Azaleas, Hydrangeas and Rhododendrons.
  • Last but not least, enjoy your garden.

Happy gardening with rootsandshoots.
